What Is Disc Golf?

“Disc golf is often described as “golf with a Frisbee,” but it’s much more than that. It’s a flying disc sport where players throw discs at a basket, aiming to complete each hole in the fewest throws possible.”

Disc golf is a fast-growing sport that combines the rules and concepts of traditional golf with the fun and accessibility of throwing a flying disc. Instead of using clubs and balls, players throw specialized discs toward a target, typically a metal basket with chains designed to catch the disc. The goal? Complete the course in as few throws as possible.

Courses generally consist of 9 or 18 holes, with varying levels of difficulty. Each hole starts with a tee-off area and ends at the basket, with obstacles like trees, water hazards, and elevation changes adding to the challenge. Disc golf can be played recreationally or competitively and is suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels.

The Basics of Disc Golf

  • Objective: Get your disc into the basket in as few throws as possible.
  • Course Layout: Most courses have 9 or 18 holes, with each hole featuring a tee pad (starting point) and a basket (goal).
  • Par System: Like traditional golf, each hole has a designated “par,” or the expected number of throws it should take to complete the hole.

What Makes Disc Golf Unique?

What sets disc golf apart from other sports is its inclusivity, accessibility, and the creativity it inspires. Here’s what makes disc golf so unique:

  1. Affordable Entry Point: A beginner can start with just one disc, which costs around $10–$25. Many courses are free to play, making it a budget-friendly activity.
  2. Minimal Equipment: Unlike traditional golf, which requires a bag full of clubs and other gear, disc golf requires only a few discs.
  3. Natural Terrain: Courses are often integrated into parks and forests, utilizing natural landscapes to create challenges. Trees, hills, and streams are as much a part of the game as the basket itself.
  4. Inclusive: Disc golf is for everyone—kids, adults, families, and professionals. Whether you’re looking for a fun weekend activity or competitive sport, disc golf offers something for everyone.
  5. Creative Freedom: Disc golf allows players to experiment with different throws, angles, and strategies. The variety of disc types—putters, mid-ranges, and drivers—adds layers of complexity and fun to the game.

Why Play Disc Golf?

  • Health Benefits: Walking, throwing, and being in nature provide great physical and mental exercise.
  • Social Connections: Whether playing casually or in a tournament, disc golf brings people together.
  • Environmentally Friendly: Disc golf courses often use existing natural spaces, requiring minimal development.

The History of Disc Golf

Disc golf traces its roots back to the early 1900s when people began tossing makeshift discs at targets like trees and trash cans. However, the modern version of the sport took shape in the 1970s when Ed Headrick, also known as “Steady Ed,” invented the first disc golf basket and founded the Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA).

Headrick’s innovations turned what was once a casual pastime into an organized sport. The first official disc golf course was established in 1975 at Oak Grove Park in California, and since then, the sport has grown exponentially. Today, disc golf boasts over 15,000 courses worldwide, and the PDGA has more than 100,000 active members from 47 countries.

How many World Championships have there been? As of 2024, there have been 43 PDGA Professional World Championships since the first tournament in 1982. The event has grown into a pinnacle competition featuring the world’s best players, such as Paul McBeth, Kristin Tattar, and Ricky Wysocki.
